Tropical Storm Debby Skirts Anna Maria Island

A weak tropical storm Debby formed in the Gulf of Mexico June 21, 200 miles from Anna Maria Island creating gusty onshore winds and waves that washed away sand dunes, sea turtle nests, and shorebird chicks. Heavy rains, high tides and an elevated storm surge flooded yards and streets. After the storm went ashore north of Cedar Key and tracked NE, the wind eased and the surfers came out to take advantage of some clean waves.
